While that’s a decent response, I will say this. If ALL OF US STRANGERS wins anything in a “horror” type of category, it makes us look like the Grammy’s when Jethro Tull won in a “heavy metal” category over Metallica (even though someone could argue, Jethro Tull uses drums and guitars, just like heavy metal bands do). Because at the end of the day, not one critic used the word “horror” in their review of that film.
Right. I think if the argument was that it’s a fantasy movie, then I think there’s something to that. But given that there are no horror elements present, and frankly I think it’s debatable that they’re ghosts at all (and not just figments of his own warring psyche) it makes for an odd inclusion in the category.
Ftr I think they are actual ghosts but some of my colleagues and friends do not agree.
Yeah, that’s where I’m at on this one. It’s definitely not a horror movie (Andrew Scott agreed on the Times roundtable), unlike the source material’s genre, but what the hell – it got unfairly dissed in awards season, I love Scott’s performance, I’ll play along.
For my money, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was not only the year’s best superhero movie, but the best movie of the year full stop.
It was the funniest movie of the year, it was the most moving, and it swam in a surfeit of wildly compelling characters — enough to fill 9 great movies, superhero or otherwise:
Lylla, Adam Warlock, Nebula, The High Evolutionary, Mantis, Drax, Cosmo, Floor, Gamora, Rocket, Nathan Fillion as Master Karja …
Volver — was a Pedro Almodovar movie around 2006, with Penelope Cruz. If memory serves, her moms ghost comes back. Again, nobody thought that was a horror film either. Just involving a ghost, doesn’t make a film horror. To take a phrase one of the Supreme Court justices said years ago, and change it slightly, “I know horror when I see it.”

All of Us Strangers horror?
Hmmm…
Kristy Puchko said on March 18, 2024
Yup. As the critic who proposed it, this haunting movie is about fear and it involves ghosts. The nominating committee overall agreed it is horror.

Yeah that one throw me for a loop, too. A bit of a stretch even though the original source material was based on horror material.

“Tetris” is a “superhero movie”?

The full name of the category should explain it: “Best Comic Book/Super Hero/Video Game Inspired Movie.”
